Who is Vishnu?

My grandmother used to tell me — Vishnu is the one who holds everything together. While Shiva destroys and Brahma creates, Vishnu is the middleman. The one who makes sure everything runs smoothly. You know how in every family there's that one person who keeps the peace? The one who steps in when things get messy? That's Vishnu. He doesn't interfere unnecessarily. He lets things play out. But when things go really wrong — when injustice becomes unbearable — he shows up. That's the whole point of his avatars. When the earth was drowning under a tyrant king, he came as Rama. When the world was burdened by demons and a corrupt ruler, he came as Krishna. He doesn't come every day. Only when we really, really need him. There's something beautiful about how he's described. He rests on a thousand-headed serpent called Shesha, floating on the cosmic ocean. From his navel grows a lotus, and on that lotus sits Brahma, who creates the universe. So Vishnu just lies there, peaceful, dreaming the entire universe into existence. And his wife is Lakshmi — the goddess of everything good. Wealth, fortune, beauty. She sits at his feet. So when you worship Vishnu, you're also inviting Lakshmi into your home. That's why so many families keep a Vishnu idol. They want both — protection and prosperity. The one thing he absolutely loves? Tulsi leaves. You can't offer a tulsi leaf to Shiva, but to Vishnu? That's the most precious gift. Every Hindu home with a tulsi plant in the courtyard — that's a Vishnu household.

Sacred Stories

1

Vamana (The Dwarf Avatar)

King Bali had conquered the three worlds. Vishnu came as a small dwarf Brahmin and asked for three steps of land. When Bali agreed, Vishnu grew to cosmic size and covered the earth, heaven, and hell in just two steps. He left the third step for Bali, sending him to the netherworld with a promise to guard it forever.

2

Narasimha (The Man-Lion)

The demon king Hiranyakashipu had a boon that no man or animal could kill him — day or night, inside or outside. Vishnu appeared as Narasimha — half-man, half-lion — at twilight, on a doorstep, and killed the demon with his claws.

3

Vishnu as Mohini

When the demons stole the nectar of immortality, Vishnu took the form of Mohini — the most beautiful woman ever seen — and tricked the demons into giving the nectar back to the gods.

What Vishnu Teaches Us

That you don't always need to interfere. Sometimes, letting things play out is wisdom. But when things go really wrong — show up. And that preservation isn't passive. It's active, loving, and protective.

Questions About Vishnu

1

Why is Vishnu blue in color?

Same reason Shiva is. It represents the infinite. The sky is blue, the ocean is blue — you can't see the end of either. Vishnu's blue skin reminds us that he's boundless, limitless.

2

How many avatars does Vishnu have?

Traditionally 10 main ones — the Dashavatara. Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki (who is yet to come). But really, they say he has countless avatars.

3

Why does Vishnu sleep on a snake?

That snake is Shesha, also called Ananta — meaning 'endless'. He represents time. Vishnu rests on time, which means he's beyond it. Time doesn't control him. He controls time.

4

What's the difference between Vishnu and Krishna?

Krishna isn't separate from Vishnu. Krishna is Vishnu. He's one of Vishnu's most famous avatars. People sometimes forget that. When you worship Krishna, you're worshipping Vishnu. But Krishna devotees will tell you — he's not just an avatar. He's the full original form. Both views are respected.

5

Why does Vishnu carry a conch and discus?

The conch (shankha) represents the sound 'Om' — the primordial sound of creation. The discus (sudarshana chakra) represents the mind — sharp, fast, and cutting through ignorance. Together, they remind us to live righteously and think clearly.
