"Learn the story behind Ganesh Chaturthi — the 10-day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles."
Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) is a 10-day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed deity who removes obstacles and grants wisdom. It falls on the Shukla Chaturthi (4th day of the waxing moon) in the Bhadrapada month (August-September). The festival is especially grand in Maharashtra, but celebrated across India. Devotees bring home Ganesha idols, worship them with modaks and durva grass, and immerse them on Anant Chaturdashi (10th day).
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha's birth for these reasons: (1) The story of Ganesha's birth — Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste and asked him to guard her door while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha didn't recognize him and stopped him. Shiva, in anger, cut off his head. When Parvati discovered this, she was devastated. Shiva promised to bring Ganesha back to life by placing the head of the first living being facing north — which was an elephant. Thus, Ganesha was reborn with an elephant head, (2) Ganesha as remover of obstacles — Before any new venture (business, travel, wedding, exam), Hindus pray to Ganesha. His name is invoked first in any puja — 'Shri Ganeshaya Namah'. He removes all obstacles (Vighna Harta), (3) Ganesha as deity of wisdom — He is the patron of arts, sciences, writing, and intellect. The sage Vyasa dictated the Mahabharata to Ganesha, who wrote it down without pausing, (4) The 10-day festival — The immersion (visarjan) symbolizes the cycle of creation and dissolution — Ganesha comes to earth, stays with devotees, and returns to Mount Kailash. The 10 days teach non-attachment — even God's form is immersed, reminding us of life's impermanence.
Ganesha is the remover of obstacles (Vighna Harta) and the lord of beginnings (Aadi Pujya). Worshipping him first ensures that the puja or venture proceeds without hindrance.
Modaks (sweet dumplings) are Ganesha's favorite food. Durva grass (a type of grass) was offered to Ganesha by a devotee to save his life — Ganesha was pleased and declared that any offering of durva grass would be accepted with equal love as the most elaborate offerings.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on September 14th, Monday. Visarjan (immersion) is on September 23rd, 2026 (Anant Chaturdashi).
