"Discover the spiritual significance of Navratri — the 9-night festival celebrating the divine feminine (Goddess Durga) and her victory over evil."
Navratri — 'nine nights' — is one of the most important Hindu festivals dedicated to the divine feminine (Shakti). It falls four times a year, with Sharad Navratri (September-October) being the most significant. Each night is dedicated to one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Navadurga). The festival culminates on the 10th day — Vijayadashami/Dussehra — celebrating Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Navratri is observed with fasting, prayer, Garba/Dandiya dance, and Kanya Puja (worshipping young girls as goddesses).
Navratri celebrates the divine feminine for these reasons: (1) Durga's victory over Mahishasura — The buffalo demon Mahishasura had a boon that no man could kill him. The gods created Goddess Durga from their collective energy (Shakti). She fought Mahishasura for 9 nights (Navratri) and killed him on the 10th day (Vijayadashami). This symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and the power of the divine feminine (Shakti) over masculine arrogance, (2) The three forms of Shakti — The 9 nights are divided into three groups of 3 nights each: first 3 nights dedicated to Durga (destroyer of impurities), next 3 nights to Lakshmi (giver of prosperity), final 3 nights to Saraswati (giver of wisdom). Moving from Tamas (inertia) → Rajas (activity/passion) → Sattva (purity/wisdom), (3) Rama's victory over Ravana — In North India, Navratri also celebrates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, which also ended on Vijayadashami. Effigies of Ravana are burned on Dussehra, (4) Inner significance — The 9 nights represent the spiritual journey: fasting purifies the body, dancing (Garba) energizes the chakras, and continuous prayer destroys the inner 'demons' of ego, greed, anger, and desire.
1. Shailputri, 2. Brahmacharini, 3. Chandraghanta, 4. Kushmanda, 5. Skandamata, 6. Katyayani, 7. Kalaratri, 8. Mahagauri, 9. Siddhidatri — each worshipped on one night.
On Ashtami or Navami, 9 young girls (kanya) below puberty are invited, worshipped as manifestations of the goddess, fed a meal (puri, halwa, chana), and given gifts. It honors the divine feminine in its purest, most innocent form.
Sharad Navratri 2026 starts October 10th (Saturday) and ends October 18th (Navami). Dussehra (Vijayadashami) falls on October 19th.
Durga kills buffalo demon Mahishasura — victory of good • 9 nights = 3 x Durga (tamas), 3 x Lakshmi (rajas), 3 x Saraswati (sattva)
