"Understand the rules about drinking water during Ekadashi fasting — which Ekadashis allow water and which do not."
One of the most common questions about Ekadashi is whether drinking water is allowed. The answer depends on the specific Ekadashi and the devotee's capacity. Most Ekadashis allow water, but Nirjala Ekadashi (the 'no water' Ekadashi) requires a completely waterless fast. The rules have exceptions for health conditions.
On most Ekadashis (23 out of 24 per year), drinking water is allowed. The rules are: (1) Regular Ekadashis: Water is permitted throughout the day. Many devotees also drink coconut water, lemon water (no sugar), or fruit juices, (2) Nirjala Ekadashi (May 29, 2026): NO water at all — completely waterless fast from sunrise to next morning's Parana. This is the most powerful Ekadashi, (3) Exceptions: Elderly people, children (under 12), pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those with serious health conditions are exempt from nirjala — they can drink water, (4) Even on regular Ekadashis, some strict devotees avoid water to increase the tapas (austerity), (5) The Parana (breaking the fast) always requires drinking water first — regardless of whether water was taken during the fast. The general rule: If you are healthy and below 60, attempt nirjala on May 29. Otherwise, stick to regular Ekadashis with water allowed.
No. Tea and coffee are not allowed on any Ekadashi. Only plain water, coconut water, lemon water (without sugar), or fruit juices are permitted.
The fast is considered broken. You can continue without water for the remaining hours as penance, but the full spiritual merit (punya) of Nirjala is not attained. You can observe the next Ekadashi with greater care.
No. Brushing teeth is allowed, but you should not swallow any water. Spit completely after brushing. Some devotees use neem or herbal twigs (datun) instead of toothpaste to avoid accidental swallowing.
23 Ekadashis — water permitted • Nirjala Ekadashi (May 29) — no water at all
