Why Is Nirjala Ekadashi Special?

Spiritual Insight • Hindu Tradition

"Discover why Nirjala Ekadashi — the waterless fast — is considered the most powerful and meritorious Ekadashi of the year."

📿

The Answer

Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi) falls in May-June. 'Nirjala' means 'without water'. On this Ekadashi, devotees observe a complete fast without food OR water — not a single drop from sunrise to the next morning's Parana. According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana and other scriptures, observing Nirjala Ekadashi yields the merit of observing ALL 24 Ekadashis of the year combined.

Nirjala Ekadashi is special because: (1) It gives the combined merit of all 24 Ekadashis — one Nirjala fast = 24 regular Ekadashi fasts, (2) It was prescribed by Bhima (the strongest Pandava) who could not control his hunger to fast 24 times a year — Sage Vyasa gave him this single-day solution, (3) It involves the greatest austerity — fasting without water is far more difficult than fasting with water, (4) It destroys all sins — past, present, and future, accumulated over many lifetimes, (5) It is believed to lead to Moksha (liberation) even for those not spiritually advanced, (6) Scientifically, a 24-hour waterless fast triggers deep autophagy — the body's cellular cleansing process, (7) It falls in summer (May-June) — observing it despite thirst shows supreme devotion. The story: Bhima asked Sage Vyasa how he could get Ekadashi merit without fasting 24 times. Vyasa told him to observe one nirjala Ekadashi on the Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi — it would equal all others. Thus, it's also called Bhima Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.
